Rory McIlroy has arguably been one of the players who has set the standard off the tee on the PGA Tour for an incredibly long time, with the Northern Irishman outstanding at sending it a mile – often straight down the middle of the fairway.
Rory McIlroy is second on the PGA Tour this year for driving distance, while he is fourth on tour for strokes gained off the tee. And it is surely fair to say that the 35-year-old has a swing which will be the envy of many. Collin Morikawa is amongst those who have been stunned by how McIlroy creates speed.
Of course, Wyndham Clark knows well what it is like to duel with McIlroy. The pair fought it out over the US Open title in 2023 – with Clark emerging victorious – while they were both involved in that remarkable match on Saturday evening at the 2023 Ryder Cup which saw Patrick Cantlay produce a colossal performance to win USA a point.
Wyndham Clark names the best driver in TGL
So perhaps that helps explain why Clark does not appear to lack any belief when it comes to his own game. The 30-year-old will be involved in TGL in the new year – the league co-founded by McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

Clark was asked who he believes is the best driver in TGL. And rather than pick McIlroy or Woods, Clark opted for himself. He also gave himself the pick for the best short game…
Where does Clark rank amongst the best drivers on the PGA Tour in 2024
Clark definitely appears to be the type of character who benefits from being positive about his own game, so it is probably not entirely surprising that he is confident in his own abilities. Clark insisted that he had had a very underrated season.
But the numbers do not exactly support Clark’s opinion. He is admittedly one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour – just seven players hit it further off the tee on average.
However, while McIlroy is 81st for driving accuracy, Clark is down in 150th. And that perhaps explains why the latter is 17th for strokes gained off the tee this season.
He obviously has the potential to be amongst the very best in that area, but perhaps it would be fair to say that there are probably not many players who would also pick Clark for that title at the moment.
