Wyndham Clark is very much in the mix to secure his second victory of the season with the 30-year-old five shots back of the lead heading into the final round of the BMW Championship.

Wyndham Clark started the third round at Castle Pines nine shots back of the lead, but a tough day for Adam Scott coupled with the 2023 US Open champion posting a third round 69 has brought Clark back into the mix.

Of course, this week is particularly special for Clark, with the PGA Tour returning to his home state of Colorado for the first time in a decade, while Castle Pines is a course he knows well from his younger days. Clark spoke glowingly about Castle Pines in the days leading up to the event.

It is Keegan Bradley who now leads the way on 12 under par, but Clark’s course knowledge may perhaps hand him a real boost down the stretch.

And speaking after his third round, Clark was asked whether he was surprised how the scoring has changed after ruling himself out of contention after Friday.

“Yeah, a little bit. I felt like I’ve played maybe some of the best golf out here, I just haven’t scored it very well. Then obviously the first day, three water balls. I’ve said it in these interviews; things could have gone a little different in each of those rounds we’d be having different talks,” he said.

“But it is really nice that guys came back a little bit. This golf course there’s a lot of scoring holes and then there’s a lot of holes you can make big numbers. If you can kind of avoid the disasters and then take advantage of those birdie holes, you can really get on a run and cover some ground.”

What Clark may need in final round to win

Of course, Clark has still got a lot of work ahead of him if he is going to secure a second victory of the year, but the fact that only four players are above him on the leaderboard is a promising sign. If the likes of Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, Ludvig Åberg and Alex Noren repeat their third rounds on Sunday, then Clark would need something around 64 to go on and win.

That is significantly lower than any of his first three rounds this week, but both Scott and Aberg have shot 63 during this event, so there are very low scores out there. Clark himself, predicted some low rounds ahead of the tournament.

He may need one of the best rounds of the year if he is going to complete an amazing comeback.
