Wyndham Clark might be well in contention to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational but unfortunately for him, the main point of discussion is not about his actual play.
Clark sits just two back of leader Shane Lowry heading into what could be an exciting weekend at Bay Hill.
With a number of players – including Rory McIlroy and Colin Morikawa – all in the mix, it’s set to be a good weekend of golf as the top players battle it out to win one of the signature events.
However, while Clark might end up coming out on top, the headlines following his round were all about a controversial bit of relief he got after finding the fairway.
Clark was slammed as a cheat by some golf fans for moving his ball before being given the ruling by the officials.
In the end, Clark was given a pass as it was confirmed his ball did indeed land in his own pitch mark.
And reacting to the situation, Clark himself has said he didn’t believe he’d done anything wrong.

Wyndham Clark comments after getting relief at the Arnold Palmer Invitational
Wyndham Clark was speaking to the media in the mixed zone immediately after his round and inevitably, the conversation turned to his free drop on the third hole.
However, according to the man himself, it was simply a case of doing what he thought was obvious.
“I mean, didn’t know there was any confusion when I was playing. When we hit it I was asking for it to stop and we never saw it bounce and when we got up there it was a plugged lie and my ball was covered in mud,” Clark commented.
“So we took relief, didn’t think anything of it and so…yeah.”
Wyndham Clarks’ first two rounds at The Arnold Palmer in numbers
Clark is very much a player who seems to blow hot and cold but he is more than capable of winning big tournaments after winning the US Open, the Wells Fargo, and the AT&T at Pebble Beach in 2024.
In terms of his opening two rounds at Bay Hill this year, the leg work was very much done on day one.
Clark was five under through his opening round with six birdies only being ruined by a single bogey on, coincidentally, the third hole.
| Wyndham Clark 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational | Round One | Round Two |
| Birdies | 6 | 4 |
| Bogeys (or worse) | 1 | 2 |
| Pars | 11 | 12 |
| Overall score | 67 (-5) | 71 |
In fairness to Clark, round two was going along nicely until he hit a nightmare hole on 15 to record double bogey and undo his good work, before he reclaimed one shot on 16 before giving another back on 17.
Clark will be hoping for something better in round three and anything around the two or three under par mark will surely see him into one of the final groups on Sunday.
