Mike Weir has revealed what Tiger Woods said to him about the Canadian fans after Weir holed a birdie putt to send their 2007 Presidents Cup singles match down the last.

Of course, the PGA Tour returns to Weir’s home country this week, with the likes of Rory McIlroy and Sahith Theegala amongst those in the field for the Canadian Open.

This year’s event feels particularly poignant with Nick Taylor the defending champion; Canada’s first winner of the event since 1954. But there is also the matter of the Presidents Cup later this year which shall be held in Quebec at Royal Montreal, with the 2003 Masters champion set to captain the International team.

The competition will return to the course which held the 2007 event. And while that proved to be a tough week for the Internationals, Weir had one particularly special moment as he took down Tiger Woods in the Sunday singles.

Woods went one up on the 15th hole before Weir tied the match with a birdie on 17. And speaking in his press conference ahead of this week, Weir shared how both he and Woods were blown away by the reaction to that moment.

“My fondest memory? Boy, I think probably the fans. I was one down I guess going to 17 and he just missed his birdie putt on 17 so I had a putt to pull even and making that putt, the roar, even Tiger was on the back of 17 after I made it and was walking back there and he said, ‘wow, that’s as loud as I’ve ever heard’. And that’s something. That moment was really cool,” he said.

What was particularly remarkable was that that putt meant that Woods was forced to play the 18th hole for the first time that week, and that perhaps showed as Weir managed to win the hole and the game.

Weir ended up finishing as the Internationals’ top points scorer that week, taking three and a half points from his five matches.

With several Canadian players pushing to make the team this time around, Weir will be hoping that they are similarly inspired when they get the chance to represent their country later this year.
