PGA Tour players often say that Tiger Woods, Seve Ballesteros or another golf great is who they look up to for inspiration.
That might still apply to Will Zalatoris, except he’s also been mentored by an ex-NFL player throughout his PGA Tour career.
Zalatoris was born in San Francisco, but he’s lived in Dallas for a long time and supports America’s team, the Cowboys.
He admitted recently that he often plays with one former Cowboy and even calls upon him for advice on how to become a world-class athlete.

Will Zalatoris looks up to one Dallas Cowboys legend
Zalatoris explained to Kay Adams that he regularly plays with Cowboys legend Tony Romo and has done so for a long time.
The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, who retired in 2016, plays off scratch, which is seriously impressive considering it’s his second sport.
But Zalatoris doesn’t need golf lessons from Romo, instead wanting to know all about his winning mentality and determination to develop into the star he eventually became.
He said: “[Romo] actually became a member at the place that I grew up at in Dallas and saw me on the side of the range getting some work in. Then eventually, we started playing a bunch of golf together and he’s been a really great mentor of mine, literally since I first turned pro.
“Asking him questions about how he went from being an undrafted backup to then eventually becoming the Cowboys [quarterback] and that kind of rise was really good for me, especially once I was getting on the PGA Tour.
“You know, a guy that’s been the quarterback for America’s team and everything just has a little more added pressure to it and [I’ve been] just kind of picking his brain.
“The guy is so golf-obsessed, to a point where it’s like he’s asking me questions that I don’t even have the answers to, and half the time I’m like, you don’t need the answer to that question.
“He loves playing. Scottie Scheffler, Jordan [Spieth] and I all play with him all the time, and he’s a fun guy to get in his pocket. It’s definitely nice when you get a little Romo money.”
Will Zalatoris’ impressive consistency in 2025 PGA Tour season
Zalatoris might not have set the world alight so far this season but his consistency has been mightily impressive, albeit somewhat frustrating.
The 28-year-old has made the cut in all seven starts, finishing inside the top 50 each time.
| Tournament | Position | Score |
| The Sentry | T26 | -19 |
| The American Express | T12 | -17 |
| Pebble Beach Pro-Am | T48 | -7 |
| Genesis Invitational | T24 | -2 |
| Arnold Palmer Invitational | T22 | E |
| The Players Championship | T30 | -3 |
| Valspar Championship | T47 | +1 |
The only negative is that Zalatoris has not contended at any tournament, either. The closest he has come to winning in 2025 was a twelfth-place finish at The American Express.
He would love to change that and be in the mix on Sunday in his next event, the Masters Tournament.
