The US Open is almost upon us and while many are looking no further than Scottie Scheffler when it comes to winning, world number three Xander Schauffele might well be going under the radar.
Scheffler is in the form of his life after winning both The Memorial and the PGA Championship and on the surface, he looks almost unbeatable.
Nevertheless, the US Open can do weird and wonderful things and with the field so strong, a number of players will fancy their chances.
One such player is the current third best player in the world, Xander Schauffele.
And with a record that only Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead can lay claim to, there’s every reason to believe that Schauffele might well be one to watch.

Why Xander Schauffele can win the US Open at Oakmont
When it comes to being consistently good at the US Open, it’s easier said than done given the usually tricky nature of both the greens and rough at the hosting venues.
Oakmont will be no different, with greens expected to be rapid and the rough already looking treacherous.
Still, there are other factors at play and when it comes to Xander Schauffele, he has every reason to believe he can be the winner come Sunday evening.
Indeed, in a stat shared by Justin Ray, Schauffele is very much the man in form when it comes to US Opens and his current streak of finishing in the top 15 can only be matched or bettered by the legendary Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus.
So far in 2025, Schauffele has not hit the heights that saw him claim two majors in 2024.
But with golf sometimes more about the mental battle than anything else, he can lean into his knowledge of knowing he’s consistent in US Opens and ultimately, that might just be enough to get him involved in the mix again.
Xander Schauffele’s full record in the US Open
You don’t get to number two in the world and stay at world number three without being an exceptional golfer and Schauffele is very much one of those.
2025 hasn’t been his year so far as he’s battled back from injury but he’s still one of the best around and his US Open record is seriously impressive.
Coming into this year’s event, Schauffele’s worst ever finish in a US Open is a T14 back in 2022. Indeed, he’s finished top ten in three of the last four seasons, and finished top six in each of his first three appearances.
| Year | Final position |
| 2017 | T5 |
| 2018 | T6 |
| 2019 | T3 |
| 2021 | 5th |
| 2022 | T14 |
| 2023 | T10 |
| 2024 | T7 |
If Schauffele can harness that willpower of knowing he can do well in the event, then it might just be the weekend we see him re-emerge as a serious contender again.
