There may well be changes made to the format of the season-ending FedEx Cup Tour Championship in August.

The FedEx Cup will reach a conclusion at East Lake Golf Club at the end of August, when Scottie Scheffler attempts to defend his Tour Championship title.

Players accumulate FedEx Cup points throughout the regular PGA Tour season, before the fields are dwindled down for the play-offs.

The FedEx St Jude Championship in early August is followed by the BMW Championship the week after.

Then the top 30 on the points list head to Atlanta, Georgia for the season finale.

Critics have suggested that the FedEx Cup finale should be played at different venues other than East Lake.

It has also been suggested that the points system is unfairly weighted towards the players who are qualified to play in the signature events.

Another issue is that the last event of the season can be somewhat of an anti-climax, with the leader in the points list handed a two-shot head-start before everyone has even teed off.

So will any key changes be made for the final event of the season?

What ‘various sources’ are now saying about changes to the Tour Championship

It seems like there are at least talks going on behind the scenes regarding ways to improve the current format of the FedEx Cup play-offs.

Golf journalist Rex Hoggard has lifted the lid on a player advisory council meeting at Hilton Head last week, when speaking on The Golf Channel’s Podcast with Rex and Lav.

Hoggard shared how there could be some changes incoming for the end of season finale, although Jay Monahan apparently wouldn’t elaborate on exactly what those changes could entail:

“They talked about the new Tour Championship format last week at a player advisory council meeting at Hilton Head. It’s getting to the point now, various sources have told me, they have an idea of what it’s going to look like this year, and it will probably evolve into something different beyond that. They’re closing in on some ideas of what they want to format to look like. I tried to get the commissioner (Jay Monahan) to talk about that, but he wasn’t biting”

Two sure-fire ways to improve PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup finale

Due to the nature of what can be an anti-climatic finish to the PGA Tour season, changes definitely need to be made.

And there are two sure-fire ways to increase interest.

Firstly, match-play has to be incorporated into the East Lake finale.

There could be two stroke-play rounds, whereby the top 16 out of the 30 qualify for a head-to-head match-play bracket.

That would obviously then be dwindled down to just two players who would face off against one another for the $25 million prize.

And secondly, varied locations is an absolute must going forward. East Lake is a very good golf course but it can become boring to watch year after year.

Perhaps the PGA Tour could even travel the globe and host the FedEx Cup finale in foreign countries, in order to garner even more worldwide interest in the sport.

The good news is that the PGA Tour are clearly aware that changes need to be made. Quite what Jay Monahan and co have in mind remains to be seen though.
