LIV Golf is stopping at one of the more notable golf courses on the calendar this week, with Club de Golf Chapultepec playing host to the event in Mexico City.
One of the big criticisms LIV Golf faces from those who question the credibility of the league surrounds some of the courses they visit. It is fair to say that some of the tracks hardly leave a lasting impression.
However, Doral was widely seen as an ideal warm-up venue for The Masters. And they are returning to action after the first major of the year this week, with LIV Golf Mexico City.
Like Doral, Club de Golf Chapultepec has previously hosted WGC events. It was the sight of the Mexico Championship between 2017 and 2020. And it provided the stage for one of the more iconic shots of Tiger Woods‘ career.
The iconic shot Tiger Woods hit on the course set to host LIV Golf Mexico City
Woods would finish the 2019 event in a tie for 10th on eight under par – 13 shots back of winner Dustin Johnson. But the 15-time major champion certainly gave fans something to remember.
Woods hit a poor tee shot on the par four ninth hole and left himself in the fairway bunker. It appeared that the tree in front of him would almost certainly prevent him from going for the green.
However, Woods hit the most outrageous cut which managed to land on the front left of the green and zip back down the slope to set up a genuine birdie opportunity.
And as Rick Shiels told The Rick Shiels Golf Show, it was the fact that Woods would not take up the opportunity which stopped him putting the shot amongst his greatest.
“This is the golf course that Tiger hit the famous bunker shot where he bent a nine iron around a tree from a fairway bunker, it landed on the green and spun like crazy to the front right pin position,” he said.
“I tried to recreate that shot. There is a plaque down there now and apparently it used to be in the bunker but because it slowed play up so much, they moved it because people were going in it and hitting balls all day.

“I had a couple of attempts from there. It is an incredible shot. It is unbelievable. He doesn’t consider it one of his greatest shots ever, although it has got to be in the top five, because he didn’t hole the putt.
I was chatting to a guy who was working here for the WGC and he asked Tiger is that your greatest shot ever, he was like no, because I would have put it up there but because I didn’t hole my putt I’m not considering it one of my greatest shots ever.”
The LIV Golf star recently awarded a plaque for his famous shot
There will be some players in the field in Mexico City this week who will know what it is like to hit a shot which becomes worthy of being commemorated with a plaque.
In fact, one LIV Golf star was awarded that honour just last week.
Bryson DeChambeau returned to Pinehurst to mark the bunker shot which set up the par he needed on the final hole to win the 2024 US Open. Plenty would have expected a playoff with Rory McIlroy to be required when he found the bunker with his second shot.
However, DeChambeau hit a brilliant pitch to leave about as simple a putt as someone could possibly have on the 18th hole to win a major at Pinehurst.
Given his last couple of results, the Crushers captain will be hoping that, rather than another plaque, it is a trophy being awarded to him in Mexico in the coming days.
