Rory McIlroy played a practice round at Oakmont alongside Adam Scott on Monday ahead of the US Open in nine days’ time.

McIlroy will be the second favourite to win the US Open, behind the red-hot Scottie Scheffler of course.

However, if the Northern Irishman is going to contend, he will need to bring his ‘A’ game.

Oakmont is being billed as potentially the most difficult US Open test of all time.

After winning the Memorial Tournament on Sunday, Scheffler said Oakmont is the toughest course he has ever played.

McIlroy is obviously capable of competing at the US Open, but he needs to head into the week in Pennsylvania with the correct attitude.

There is no doubt about the fact that McIlroy has been off the boil since his driver was deemed to be non-conforming.

The 35-year-old needs to flip that narrative starting this week and then on into next week for the US Open.

What Rory McIlroy did during Oakmont practice round ahead of the US Open

McIlroy flew into Pennsylvania for a quick practice round alongside Adam Scott on Monday.

The five-time major champion is set to play in the Canadian Open this week, so he obviously wanted to get an early scouting mission in at Oakmont before travelling further north.

So how did he get on at the Henry Fownes design?

The Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch has opened up on what McIlroy told him about his practice round at Oakmont, and it doesn’t sound encouraging whatsoever.

The Masters champion hit a three-wood into the par-three 8th hole and made a bogey. He triple bogeyed the second hole, despite ‘hitting three good shots’, as he told Lynch.

Quite how McIlroy’s game is shaping up is actually unclear. Oakmont is a ridiculously hard golf course, so big numbers are possible at any time.

The Northern Irishman will be hoping for a solid week up in Canada so that he’s able to build up some confidence heading into the big one next week.

What Adam Scott shot for nine holes at Oakmont after hitting every fairway

So we mentioned earlier that McIlroy played alongside Scott on Monday at Oakmont.

And it seems like the Australian played very well indeed.

He hit every fairway on the front nine, but shot three-over-par, according to Lynch.

Oakmont is clearly going to play incredibly difficult for the US Open, and McIlroy and Scott will be able to attest to that.

It will be interesting to see whether a score better than par ends up winning the tournament. Judging by how the course is looking right now, that’s highly doubtful.
