Nelly Korda entered the 2024 US Open’s Women as strong favourite, which was unsurprising given her recent success.
The world number one has six wins from her last seven starts, arriving at Lancaster Country Club in formidable form.
The 25-year-old did, however, come up very short in her bid to clinch a first-ever US Women’s Open title, and a third major title overall.
It all came suddenly crashing down after just three holes, with Korda posting a nightmare 10 on the par-three 12th.
Her ball found the water hazard three times, with the American star ending up with a 10-over 80 for the round.

Nelly Korda makes quick return after US Women’s Open first round
Like all great athletes across all sports, however, Korda was quick to put the misery behind her at Lancaster Country Club.
The world number one has proven her resilience time and again, and cannot be ruled out of making a stunning comeback on day two.
She is certainly doing her best to do exactly that, with Korda going straight to the driving range following her opening round, as per Meg Adkins on X.
Top stars struggling at the US Women’s Open
Korda was by no means the only top player to struggle in the opening stages of the 79th US Women’s Open.
Rose Zhang, who Golf writer Beth Ann Nichols predicted would rival Korda to win the tournament, shot an opening round nine-over 79.
World number three Celine Boutier is currently tied for 22nd after shooting a two-over 72, with world number four Ruoning Yin one behind on three-over.
And joining Korda all the way back on 10-over are Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson, with Lexi Thompson just two ahead on eight-over.
The latter will certainly want to make a quick comeback, having just announced that she will retire at the end of the season, with Korda full of praise for her fellow professional after she heard the news.
