Fans of Jordan Spieth will be finding it difficult to not get a little carried away following his performance at the WM Phoenix Open in which he finished in a tie for fourth.
Heading into the final round, Jordan Spieth appeared to only have a slim chance of catching Thomas Detry. The Belgian was five clear of the chasing pack with 18 holes to play, and Spieth was amongst those tied for second.
Ultimately, Detry got the job done in some style, with the European winning by seven after a late flurry of birdies. But depending on what happens in the years to come, many may well remember the 2025 WM Phoenix Open for Spieth’s performance.
Spieth showed some promise at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but a 79 on Saturday put paid to his hopes of a good finish. However, he only made two bogeys all week at TPC Scottsdale.
What Michael Kim said before Jordan Spieth’s recovery shot on 11 at the WM Phoenix Open
But that does not mean that Spieth was not at the centre of drama in Phoenix. The 31-year-old’s tee shot on 11 during the final round came to rest under a bush.
Spieth took his time deciding how he was going to play the shot, but ultimately settled on trying to bump the ball back towards the fairway by using the back of his putter while taking a left-handed stance.

Somehow, he managed to save par from there. Fans were amazed by Spieth’s antics, while also not at all surprised. And it seems that his playing partners were far from shocked to see the three-time major champion salvage a par.
Speaking on X, Michael Kim shared what he and Maverick McNealy were saying as he prepared to hit the shot with the back of his putter.
How Kim reacted to Spieth’s stunning approach on 17
By the time Spieth was coming towards the end of the 17th hole, it was clear that Detry was going to have enough to get across the line. And thus, much of the focus was rightly on Detry’s first ever PGA Tour win.
However, Spieth still managed to steal the show one more time as he hit the most outrageous chip on the penultimate hole to set up one final birdie. But once again, Kim was not at all surprised to see him produce a shot of that class.
It certainly seems to be a big boost for the PGA Tour to have Spieth heading back towards something like his best.
