Max Homa desperately needs a good week at the John Deere Classic after what has proved to be an extremely difficult season for the 34-year-old.
Max Homa went into the John Deere Classic sitting in 122nd in the FedEx Cup standings. With that, he is likely to need a strong end to the regular season to force his way into the playoff picture.
Homa has missed seven cuts in the 16 events he has played on the PGA Tour. Remarkably, you would have to go back to The Masters for the last time that he finished inside the top 25.
In fact, there has only been one finish in the top 50 since he was extremely close to another top 10 at Augusta National.
What Max Homa did for the first time in his PGA Tour career at the John Deere Classic
Putting four good rounds together has been tough for Homa this year. So he will not be getting carried away with his opening round at TPC Deere Run. But there were definitely a number of promising signs for the six-time winner on tour.

Homa made nine birdies to open up with a 63 in Illinois. Unfortunately for the 2023 Ryder Cup star, he made a bogey on his final hole of the day to sign for an eight under par round.
Nevertheless, it turns out to have been the best opening round Homa has produced in his PGA Tour career.
The best rounds of Max Homa’s season on the PGA Tour
It will not be a surprise to many to hear that it was Homa’s best round of the season so far. Many will remember when he produced a brilliant 64 on Friday at the PGA Championship. However, it proved to be a fairly miserable weekend for him at Quail Hollow as he followed that with 76 and 77.
Elsewhere, there have been excellent first rounds at the Truist Championship and at Memorial, where he shot 66 and 68 respectively.
Hopefully this week proves to be the event where it all clicks and Homa starts to look a lot more like his old self again.
