Luke Donald was presented with a potentially big dilemma at the Ryder Cup in 2023 when he named Sepp Straka as one of his six captain’s picks.
Donald was a huge success in his role as European Ryder Cup captain, so much so that he was given a second bite of the cherry, being named captain once again for the 2025 showdown at Bethpage Black.
Just like Donald, Straka will be part of Team Europe once again next week.
Donald had full faith in Straka ahead of making his Ryder Cup picks, in spite of the 32-year-old Austrian’s patchy form over the final couple of months of the PGA Tour season.
Interestingly, there was a point in time when Straka could have represented the United States at the Ryder Cup, but he stuck with his Austrian roots in the end, and opted to play for Europe.
The four-time PGA Tour winner will be hoping to improve upon his 1-2-0 Ryder Cup record at Bethpage.
And having his American caddie – Duane Bock – on the bag in New York will make for an interesting subplot.
Luke Donald’s opinion about Sepp Straka having an American caddie at the Ryder Cup
Bock has been on Straka’s bag since the summer of 2023.
And it was very much a case of being thrown in at the deep end for the man affectionately known as ‘Dewey’.

One of his first gigs was caddying for the big Austrian at Marco Simone in September of 2023.
Straka’s caddie spoke to SIRIUS PGA TOUR Radio about his experience of caddying for his boss during the Ryder Cup in Rome.
He explained how European captain Donald treated him given the fact that he is American.
Bock said: “Captain Luke, his attention to detail is second to none, no stone left unturned.
“What was most impressive to me two years ago was his inclusion with me being an American. It didn’t matter where we were from, we were included 100 per cent in everything.
“Caddies are no different to players on that European side. We are one unit trying to accomplish one goal.
“One thing that was so impressive was Luke’s wife was there, she knew everybody’s names, she knew my wife’s name, she knew things about my wife.
“They just made sure everybody was comfortable. Everything is so scheduled out to the minute so there’s no waiting around or things like that. We know where we need to be at what time and like I said, his attention to detail is second to none.”
Why Sepp Straka was the only European Ryder Cup player not to play in the BMW PGA
Alarm bells were ringing among European golf fans when it emerged that Straka would not be playing in the BMW PGA Championship last week.
Not only had the Austrian ended the season in poor form, but then he didn’t play at Wentworth alongside his 11 Ryder Cup teammates either.
However, there was nothing untoward going on. Straka’s wife prematurely gave birth to their second child in early September.
Understandably, the 32-year-old wanted to spend time with his wife and his new-born baby.
It’s very much down to business for the Georgia Bulldog now, though.
Straka and his American caddie will have key roles to play for the Europeans at the Ryder Cup next week.
And Donald will be hoping that the four-time PGA Tour winner isn’t too rusty heading into the clash at Bethpage Black.
