Tiger Woods is still very much the name associated with golf to the average sports fan and while many get compared to him at some point, Jordan Spieth had his say on the issue way back in 2017.

At the time, Spieth was one of the hottest properties in the game having won the US Open and Masters in 2015, and then nabbing The Open in 2017. Indeed, but for a second place at the PGA in 2015, Spieth was very much putting up Tiger-like numbers.

Of course, when you’re playing golf like Spieth was – and we see Scottie Scheffler doing right now – the comparisons to the great Woods will come.

However, for Spieth, who has not followed up those major wins since, being compared to such a player is not even something he thinks about.

What Jordan Spieth said about being compared to Tiger Woods

Speaking to CNN after sealing his 10th PGA Tour win in 2017 at the Travelers Championship, Spieth got onto the subject of comparisons – namely with Tiger Woods – but refused to be drawn.

Instead, Spieth insisted that he was simply lucky to just be playing golf on the PGA Tour.

“I’m hesitant and will speak out adamantly about not comparing myself to anybody else,” Spieth said.

“I think that’s unfair. I don’t think anybody will do what Tiger did for the game. But it’s really cool to be out here at my age, to experience what we’re able to experience, play golf for a living. That’s a dream come true for me.”

Jordan Spieth’s comments on Tiger Woods comparisons ring true in 2024

While Spieth has only won twice on the PGA Tour since 2017 and Tiger hasn’t won at all since 2019, the American duo remain two of the biggest names in the sport.

Indeed, when it comes Woods, his draw in 2024 remains unmatched and shows that Spieth was spot on in 2017.

Indeed, Woods managed to outshine the Showdown at the PNC last weekend and that in itself just proves the major attraction of the man.

As Spieth said seven years back, nobody has really done for the game what Tiger has and it’s highly doubtful anyone will do so in the future.

In terms of ‘moving the needle’, Tiger Woods remains very much the best.
