There are so many golfers coming through the college system in the United States who have the ability to go on and become superstars on the PGA Tour.

However, only a very small percentage of them make it at the highest level, and PGA Tour player Billy Horschel is very familiar with one of those who failed to make the grade.

The 38-year-old is one of the leading faces on tour, and often speaks his mind about the current issues in the game.

Horschel recently suggested that the PGA Tour and LIV Golf need to merge together, in order to provide a better product for the fans.

He has also been very open about his struggles in the game. Horschel admitted to feeling extremely anxious every time he plays The Masters, in spite of his vast experience.

However, he obviously has something special mentally – he wouldn’t have reached the levels he has in the game if he didn’t.

With eight PGA Tour wins to his name, Horschel knows exactly what it takes to make it to the highest level of professional golf.

It is such a hard field to excel in. Even some of the best juniors in the game fail to reach the top.

Whatever happened to Billy Horschel’s college teammate James Vargas

Horschel joined University of Florida as a Freshman in 2005 when James Vargas was a Senior.

At the time, Vargas was ranked as the best junior golfer in the world, but he never made it on the PGA Tour in the end.

Horschel was a guest on the Your Golf Performance Podcast, and he discussed just how difficult it is to make it at the very highest level of the game.

He used his former college teammate James Vargas as an example of that.

Horschel said: James Vargas was a top junior player and the number one junior player in the world and everyone thought he was going to have this crazy PGA Tour career after college.

He never did, but he was a senior when I went in. He was still a great player and still a good player. There were so many players at the University of Florida who were talented.

What is James Vargas doing now?

Vargas ended up playing just three PGA Tour events throughout his career, making just one cut.

The 40-year-old is now the head golf coach at Texas Tech University – a prestigious job in its own right.

While he never made it on tour, he has still forged a very respectable career for himself in the golfing world.

Vargas’s career proves that no matter how good you are as a junior golfer, something extra is required to make it at the highest level of the game.

And the missing ingredients for those who fail to make the grade are usually an elite mentality and a strong work ethic.

Horschel has those two things in abundance, and those qualities are what has made him the player he is today.
