While there is always something special in the air in a Ryder Cup year, there appears to be something a little different about the build-up to 2025 and the showdown at Bethpage Black.
The 2025 Ryder Cup undoubtedly has the potential to be the best in the event’s incredible history. Europe are looking to become only the third team to win an away Ryder Cup since the turn of the century. Meanwhile, Luke Donald would arguably go down as the team’s greatest ever captain should he lead his side to victory.
USA have taken a big gamble, with Keegan Bradley named as their captain. Bradley stands a fantastic chance of making the team as a player. But his affection for Bethpage Black has shone through in the months since the announcement of his captaincy was made.
The US are also looking to bounce back from such a disappointing showing in Rome. In truth, the 16.5-11.5 scoreline flattered the visitors at Marco Simone.
A Ryder Cup first at Bethpage Black
One of the defining images at Ryder Cups in recent years has been the sight of thousands of fans around the first tee. It is remarkable just to look at the difference between 2012 and 2014. And it seems one of the targets each time the event comes around is to outdo the previous grandstand.
The 2018 stage at Le Golf National is going to be difficult to beat. But Bethpage seems to have an ace up its sleeve. Speaking to CBS Sports, PGA of America Chief Championships Officer Kerry Haigh has shared what will be unique about 2025.

“Overall, the spectators are there to have a good time. Yes, we want them to shout, we want them to show passion, but be respectful to both teams, which is what makes the Ryder Cup so great,” he said.
“The first tee at the Ryder Cup, there is nothing like it in the game of golf. We’ve created a grandstand for the first time that will be around not only the first tee, but the 18th green, which are actually side by side, so if you’re in that grandstand, you’ll be able to see players tee off, and three or four hours later, come back to play 18. So it’s going to be an incredible atmosphere. Bethpage is a wonderful site.”
How busy the 18th hole was at the 2023 Ryder Cup
It is a fantastic idea as – as it is a matchplay event – the 18th hole does not always see a lot of traffic throughout the week.
Not one of the morning matches in 2023 went down the final hole. However, three of Friday afternoon’s games went the distance, with Europe earning a half in each match. Meanwhile, few will ever forget Patrick Cantlay winning the US a valuable point on a heated Saturday afternoon.
Four matches went down the last on Sunday, with Max Homa making a putt which ensured that his match did not see Europe earn the half point they needed to win the cup.
Those on the cautious side will fear another Brookline if the crowd crosses the line. However, there is no question at all that Bethpage definitely has the potential to set the new standard for all future Ryder Cups.
