Bethpage Black is a notoriously difficult golf course, although it must be said it didn’t play that way during the Ryder cup last week.
Bethpage was neutered on the insistence of US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, who asked for the rough to be cut down to a point where it was almost non-existent.
The deluge of rain that fell down on Bethpage two days before the Ryder Cup began made the golf course play even easier.
In fact, players were better off hitting their tee shots into the rough so that they didn’t create as much spin on their second shots into the greens.
Bradley bemoaned the softness of Bethpage during the Ryder Cup, but if truth be told, an average golfer would still have found the golf course on Long Island a very difficult test, due to its sheer length off the back tees.
One extremely talented female amateur golfer found out the hard way just how difficult Bethpage is before the Ryder Cup got underway.
What a plus-four female golfer shot at Bethpage Black from the back tees
YouTube content creator Paige Spiranac, a plus-four handicap golfer according to the YouTube Handicap Tracker, took part in a video for the St. André Golf channel on the platform.
A few months ago, Spiranac shot a superb round of three-under par at Oakmont, but this challenge at Bethpage was a different animal altogether.

The 32-year-old had to play off the tips – quite the task considering that the course stretches out to nearly 7,500 yards.
Incredibly, Bethpage has a course rating off the back tees of 85.5 with a 155 slope.
Spiranac shot a respectable round of 85, 14-over par, one that featured eight bogeys, three double bogeys and seven pars.
Considering the fact she played off the tips, her round of 85 wasn’t actually that bad at all, and was probably the equivalent of around even-par, taking everything into account.
Paige Spiranac’s last five rounds including Bethpage Black challenge
Spiranac is an extremely talented golfer.
We’ve already told you about her scintillating round of 68 at Oakmont back in May but it’s worth noting that she carded a 69 at TPC Scottsdale – Champions Course earlier in the year as well.
Here are her last five recorded scores, including rounds at some of the toughest golf courses in America:
| Spiranac’s score | Course name | Course rating adjusted score |
| 85 | Bethpage Black | -0.36 |
| 72 | University of Denver Golf Club | -2.16 |
| 68 | Oakmont | -6.50 |
| 71 | University of Denver Golf Club | -3.55 |
| 74 | East Lake | +3.08 |
With a handicap of plus-four, it’s clear to see that Spiranac is one of the best amateur female golfers in the world.
However, her round of 85 at Bethpage goes to show just how much bite the public golf course on Long Island still has, despite what you may have heard to the contrary during the Ryder Cup.
