It’s safe to say that Viktor Hovland has quite the up and down year on the PGA Tour as he prepares for the season finale this week.

Hovland has made his way to East Lake to try and defend his FedEx Cup crown and prove to everyone that he can indeed still be a winner.

However, over the course of 2024 it’s easy to see why people have started to doubt the Norwegian.

Hovland had only one top 20 finish in his first six events before failing to make the cut at the Masters.

He then found form to finish third at the PGA Championship, once again missed the cut at the US Open, missed it yet again at The Open, before finding some form a few weeks back at the St Jude to finish second.

Hovland, then, is in a period of inconsistency and who knows what version will turn up this week.

Still, Hovland is not having that 2024 is all bad and he’s been explaining what he still sees as positives.

Viktor Hovland sums up his 2024 season on the PGA Tour

Speaking ahead of teeing it up at East Lake this week, Hovland was questioned on his thoughts on his up and down year.

And while Hovland said some of his play had been ‘garbage’, he did admit he found it ‘cool’ he could still contend.

“I mean I wouldn’t say I’ve been very happy with this year but I do think I’ve learned a lot,” Hovland quipped.

“What’s really cool is I still made it to this week playing what I felt was absolute garbage. So that’s something that’s pretty cool to kind of have in my back pocket.

“So we can struggle but still come out here and have a chance to win. I think that’s really cool and that’s how I’m processing this.

“I might look at the end of the year and really look at the whole course of the year but I think I do a pretty good job of analysing each week as they go, so I know where I’m at. I’m always present and analysing what’s going on.”

Hovland is looking to defend his FedEx title but faces an uphill task to do so given how far back he is.

It’s not the worst it could be for Hovland but he is still starting eight shots back of Scottie Scheffler and that would be a mammoth performance if he is to reel him in.

Still, you never know in golf and last year, Hovland won at a canter by five strokes.

And given his erratic form, he might just turn up and produce a masterclass out of nowhere.
