The last two years have been a real rollercoaster journey for Viktor Hovland on the PGA Tour.

After he won the FedEx Cup in 2023, Hovland embarked on some big swing changes, and many journalists questioned why on earth he was changing something that worked so well in the first place.

The 27-year-old spent the entire 2024 PGA Tour season in the golfing wilderness so to speak, with only two top-10s to his name in 16 events.

He has endured a problematic 2025 season as well, and he won the Valspar Championship back in March.

Hovland has actually suggested that he has made some improvements recently but he’s still a long way off the levels he produced in 2023.

And now the Norwegian has opened up on the real reason why he changed his golf swing after achieving so much success two years ago.

Viktor Hovland reveals exactly what went wrong with his golf swing

Hovland is as honest as the day is long when talking about the issues he has with his golf swing.

And that was no different when he appeared on the Me And My Golf YouTube channel.

Hovland was asked exactly why he felt the need to change things after winning three times in 2023.

He said: Some of that has been misconstrued in the media. I didn’t just go, ‘oh, I’ve won everything and I’m one of the best players in the world and it’s not good enough, I need to change everything’.

If you look at my swing since I came out on tour, it has changed a lot. I’ve kind of reinvented myself within the same pattern that I’ve always had over every single year.

The tricky part about this game is that if you have one simple swing thought, let’s say for a couple of years, it’s going to start to change other things in your swing. Then you have to manipulate and come up with other match-ups to make that work.

When I first came out on tour my hand path was a little bit more out, hands shifted out more, I had a lot of side bend and I would hit bigger cuts. When I started working on it, I sped up the backswing, got more depth at the top so I could straighten out the ball-flight. I also hit the ball higher up in the air which suited me for major championships and harder golf courses. As soon as I started doing this it was amazing, and then eventually I got to a point where my forearms were turnings differently and I was getting way more across the line at the top.

The problem was towards the end of 2023, I couldn’t hit a cut. So now I had a draw or even a hook backswing and tried to hit a cut from there. I didn’t have enough time to even shift the arms out and shallow because that would still be a draw shot. I started pulling with my arms and open up to try and hit fades.

That’s where I had some really big issues in my swing. So I’m trying to get back to where I thought I swung my best. I have always been into swing stuff so I am a little disappointed in myself that I allowed myself to get that way.

Viktor Hovland’s 2025 PGA Tour results

Despite his win five months ago, 2025 has been a really challenging season for Hovland.

Here is how his results look so far:

Events played15
Wins1
Top-10s2
Top-25s7
Missed cuts3

Those results are simply not good enough for a man of Hovland’s calibre.

If he hadn’t won in Tampa in March, his season would have been an extremely poor one on the whole.

Hovland will have to work incredibly hard on his game during the off-season if he is to rediscover the form that he showed so consistently in 2022 and 2023.
