With Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler winning the first two majors of the year, there is reason to be hugely excited as the US Open returns to Oakmont next week.
Golf appears to be enjoying a golden era, with the best players on the planet dominating the major championships, with Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau winning the last six major championships.
It set up a mouthwatering PGA Championship, with Scheffler and DeChambeau both winning on their most recent starts leading into Quail Hollow.
But Jon Rahm also went on to remind everyone of his quality at the second major of the year. The Spaniard was tied for the lead midway through the final round before falling away as Scheffler went on to win his third major title.
US Open winner assesses Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau’s chances of winning at Oakmont
It would be wrong to suggest that the PGA Championship lived up to expectations. But it has definitely whet the appetite for the US Open, which heads to Oakmont for the first time since 2016 next week.
No player has ever won the US Open at Oakmont with a score of six under par or better. So it is almost certainly going to be about which player makes the fewest mistakes.

And speaking to Fried Egg Golf, 2006 champion Geoff Ogilvy suggested how he would rank the five players, as well as Brooks Koepka, based on how likely they are to win the US Open.
“For Oakmont, Scottie for sure, one. Rory is hard to rank, because his best is probably the best. His best is probably better than Scheffler’s best, but Scheffler’s the same every week. He’s just nuts every week. Rory gives us some strange ones,” he said.
“I’d probably have to put Bryson two, Rory three, Xander four. Who have we got left? Rahm and then Brooks probably.”
Geoff Ogilvy predicts how many majors Scottie Scheffler will end up winning
Scheffler is perhaps playing the best golf of his career yet at the moment. He has won in three of his last four starts. And his performance at the PGA Championship sent out such an ominous message to his rivals.
With that, Ogilvy did confirm that Scheffler is indeed his pick to win the US Open. He was then asked how many majors he believes he will end up with.
“I know that’s the boring answer, but I have to [pick Scheffler], I think. How do you not take him? I don’t think he’s a lifetime list guy like a Tiger, but he’s such a hyper-competitive guy, he just wants to win so bad. I think Rory winning the career grand slam added a little bit of fuel to that: ‘oh no, I’m actually the guy’. So I think he’s on a run of motivation and competitiveness at the moment. It’s going to be hard to go past him,” he added.
“For Scheffler? What’s he got? Three? Seven [majors].”
