The US Open at Oakmont claimed plenty of victims on day one.

Big names like Rory McIlroy and LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau struggled to rounds of 73 and 74 respectively.

Gil Hanse suggested that even-par will win the US Open at Oakmont this week, after he restored the highly-esteemed property recently.

Oakmont showed its teeth on day one, with numerous rounds in the 80s recorded.

The rough is incredibly thick, while the greens at Oakmont are lightning fast, and they are incredibly undulating as well.

Any score around par was a great effort on Thursday.

And one of the men who posted an under-par round actually admitted that the course is too hard for him.

Si Woo Kim says Oakmont is ‘too hard’ for him after day one at the US Open

Nestled in behind first round leader J.J. Spaun is South Korean star Si Woo Kim.

The 29-year-old posted a really solid round of two-under par 68.

Si Woo’s round was comprised of four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars.

He spoke to reporters after his round and made an astonishingly honest admission about how he’s feeling right now.

He said, It was tough. I played three nine holes, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and I saw the past scores, like 5-over win. Honestly, I don’t even know what I’m doing on the course.

Kind of hitting good but feel like this course is too hard for me. So kind of like no expectation, but I played great today.

He was then asked how he can not know what he’s doing after shooting a 68 on day one.

Si Woo explained, Yeah, I’m seeing more — even if I shot 80, I feel like not going to be bad round. But I did it great because less windy for sure first nine holes, and then hitting pretty much — only couple misses rough, I think that helps me to play, get the good score.

That really is a bizarre admission from Si Woo. His game was in fine shape on Thursday at Oakmont, and if he follows that up with three rounds of 70, he may well be the US Open champion come 7pm Sunday evening.

The worst scores at Oakmont on day one of the US Open

At the time of writing, there had been plenty of real horror stories out on the course.

Here are the worst numbers posted around two thirds of the way through the opening day’s play:

Oakmont is quite clearly an incredibly difficult test of golf.

However, Si Woo Kim may have been exaggerating when describing how hard he found the Oakmont layout during day one of the US Open.

The fact that he shot an opening round of 68 proves that he’s more than good enough to compete for America’s national championship this year.
