Rory McIlroy won his second Irish Open trophy in thrilling fashion and Tyrrell Hatton reacted to his Ryder Cup teammate’s victory on social media.
McIlroy holed a dramatic 30-foot putt for eagle on the 18th hole of regulation play at the Irish Open to force a playoff with Swede Joakim Lagergren, who was already in the clubhouse at 17-under par.
And Tyrrell Hatton sent the Northern Irishman a message after his stunning finish at The K Club.
When speaking to the media in the aftermath of his victory at the K Club, McIlroy said he’s very happy with his game after his Irish Open win.
And why wouldn’t he be? The 36-year-old looked like his old self as he strutted around the K Club this week.
McIlroy spoke of his confidence ahead of the Ryder Cup following his playoff win over Lagergren on Sunday.
Isn’t it just great to see the fire being lit in the Northern Irishman’s belly once again? The game of golf needs McIlroy back and firing on all cylinders.
He is the chief needle-mover in the game right now, and the sport is far better off when he is winning, or at least contending.
And his win at the Irish Open was a very timely reminder to everyone that he is going absolutely nowhere.
Tyrrell Hatton sends message to Rory McIlroy after his Irish Open win
Hatton and McIlroy are close friends away from the golf course, despite playing on rival tours.
And the Englishman sent a message of congratulations to McIlroy after the man from Holywood, Northern Ireland, recorded his fourth worldwide win of the 2025 season.
“Always a great week in Ireland at the Irish Open, the crowds & support was amazing all week.
“Congratulations Rory McIlroy on the win! Next stop the BMW PGA Championship.“
McIlroy will be very keen to continue his fine form at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth starting on Thursday, and who would bet against him not making it two wins in a row?
Hatton will also be desperate for a good result, with the Ryder Cup now only 19 days away.
Rory McIlroy and Tyrrell Hatton could pair up at the Ryder Cup
McIlroy and Hatton have never actually been partnered together at the Ryder Cup.
However, their games are ideally suited to one another.
McIlroy obviously possesses prodigious length off the tee and Hatton is one of the very best iron players in the game.
The Englishman ranked third in greens in regulation on LIV Golf this season and let’s not forget that he’s a sensationally good putter as well.
McIlroy will most likely be paired with Tommy Fleetwood and Hatton with Jon Rahm.
However, if Luke Donald wants to mix things up at Bethpage Black, the Northern Irishman and the Englishman would be a very decent option for him.
