Tyrrell Hatton was one of the stars of the show as Team GB & Ireland hammered Continental Europe in the Team Cup, in what many look at as a sort of audition for the upcoming Ryder Cup.

With Team Europe set to go to Bethpage in September looking to defend the trophy they won so convincingly in 2023, all eyes are on Luke Donald and who his six picks will be again.

This time around, things are more complicated thanks to the likes of Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm being on the LIV circuit, while Laurie Canter was also part of the winning Team Cup side this weekend.

Of course, Hatton and Rahm have been fixtures of Team Europe for the last few Ryder Cups and both played big roles in helping Europe win in Rome.

And now, Hatton has outlined his intentions to captain Luke Donald.

Tyrrell Hatton explains his Ryder Cup thoughts after winning the Team Cup

Speaking to the press on course after helping the GB & Ireland team to a win in the Team Cup, Hatton got onto his Ryder Cup future.

And confirming his intention to play, Hatton admitting he’s very much going to be going for automatic qualification once more.

“I think by now Luke knows what I’m capable of and the type of golf I can produce. Ultimately my job is harder to automatically qualify for the team, but I still see it as though I have 5 events to do that, and I’m going to give it my best,” Hatton said.

“My last 3 Ryder Cups I’ve been able to automatically qualify and I’d like to keep that streak going.”

Tyrell Hatton’s Ryder Cup record

Tyrrell Hatton is one of a number of players who would effectively be guaranteed spots on the team if everything in golf was harmonised again.

However, with LIV players not picking up OWGR points and slipping down the leaderboard, Hatton is likely to be be reliant on a pick – if Luke Donald is even allowed to select him.

In 2023, Hatton showed how crucial he is to the team by winning the opening session alongside Jon Rahm before halving the afternoon session alongside Viktor Hovland.

Hatton then teamed up with Rahm again on the Saturday to beat Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, while in the Sunday singles, he comfortably beat Brian Harman to make it 3.5 points won from a possible four.

2021 was less successful for Hatton, where he bagged just 1.5 points, while 2018’s effort saw him back just the single point, as he and Paul Casey beat Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson in the Saturday fourballs.

Overall, with six Ryder Cup points earned from three events, Tyrrell Hatton has shown he belongs and it would a be a big shame to not see him involved at Bethpage.
