When Scottie Scheffler completed his second round at the US Open, there appeared to be an outside chance that the world number one would miss his first cut in a major since the 2022 PGA Championship.

Had it not been Scottie Scheffler sat on four over par at the halfway mark at Oakmont, you would imagine that his hopes of winning the US Open would have been dashed. In fact, he found himself around the cut line.

Ultimately, Scheffler made the weekend comfortably. Nevertheless, he went into the final round with even more ground to make up after a level par Saturday in Pennsylvania.

Scheffler was still unable to break par on Sunday. However, he made further strides up the leaderboard to end up in a tie for seventh.

And at one stage, it appeared entirely possible that Scheffler was in contention to win the entire thing. He hit some sublime approach shots during the middle of his final round as many of those at the top of the leaderboard started to move back towards the field.

He failed to convert the chances he gave himself. And with that, he ended up finishing with a tie for seventh at Oakmont.

Speaking on Fried Egg Golf, Trevor Immelman suggested that he was so impressed by how Scheffler managed to overcome not being anywhere near his best to end up in the mix.

“The amazing thing about Scheffler is he’s so good, he’s so good that he can have his D game and still have a chance to win with nine holes to play, and that’s quite special. That’s quite something,” he said.

“He made nothing on Sunday, and still with a few holes to go when everyone else started to leak oil, you were like golly, is he going to be able to get in there at two over and have a chance to win this before J.J. made those great birdies to finish?

“But yeah, he’s good. That’s obviously not groundbreaking analysis right there, but to be able to come to as tough of a test as what this is and clearly not have his best stuff and still have a shot at it is quite something.”

The surprising run Scottie Scheffler has been putting together at the US Open

Scheffler is known for being someone who can thrive in the toughest conditions. He has won both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Memorial Tournament twice. He also shone on Sunday at Le Golf National to clinch an Olympic gold medal.

So it is a huge surprise to think that he has now not broken par in each of his last nine US Open rounds. The last time he posted a score in the 60s came during the third round at LACC in 2023.

Pinehurst was not a great week for Scheffler. But the fact that he managed to finish in the top 10 at Oakmont says a lot.

Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut, while Rory McIlroy was not far away from suffering a similar fate. So the fact that Scheffler was someone being spoken about deep into Sunday is ominous for all of his rivals.
