Rory McIlroy is all but out of contention to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship this weekend and one of the top golf coaches in the world has picked up on some swing problems.
The Northern Irishman is over in the Middle East looking to win the Race to Dubai once more and has carded two successive rounds of five-under par at Yas Links.
However, things could have been so much better for McIlroy, who came home with a triple bogey on 17 in his second round today to leave shots out there.
Indeed, McIlroy was seven-under through 13 at one point as he looked on course for a huge round.
As we’ve seen, McIlroy has a new swing this week which he believes is feeling ‘okay’ for now as he get to grips with the changes.
But according to one top 100 golf coach, there are obvious problems in McIlroy’s new approach.

Rory McIlroy told his new swing still has some problems
Changing a swing or even just a swing thought in golf is one of the hardest things any player can do and it’s no different for the best in the world like McIlroy.
And taking to X to analyse the new look for the 35-year-old, golf coach Jonathan Yarwood has explained why, for now at least, McIlroy is still struggling with a few elements.
Can Rory McIlroy finally find the swing feel to win major number five?
Golfers are always looking for perfection and with that comes a slight change in what they do with the golf club through their career.
Tiger Woods made changes despite being on top of the world, and McIlroy has changed more than once, previously going in search of extra yardage off the tee when the likes of Bryson DeChambeau emerged.
Of course, the end game for McIlroy is to win the Masters or finally win major number five in 2025.
Right now, he’s looking solid enough without being in contention.
But the fundamentals seem to be there and as Yarwood points out here, then it clicks, it could be time for McIlroy to really hit form again.
