Tommy Fleetwood has never had a better opportunity to secure his first PGA Tour win than he now has at the Travelers Championship, with the Englishman three shots clear with one round to play at TPC River Highlands.

Tommy Fleetwood reached the halfway mark at the Travelers Championship tied for the lead with Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas. Given that both American players have won this year, it seemed hard not to make Fleetwood the underdog of the trio.

However, it was Fleetwood who put his foot on the accelerator on Saturday in Connecticut. Both Scheffler and Thomas finished over par for the day to see their chances of victory all but evaporate.

Fleetwood meanwhile, is three shots ahead of Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley.

Tommy Fleetwood explains what he loves about TPC River Highlands

Of course, Fleetwood does have experience of winning on the DP World Tour, while he has seven top five finishes in the majors. And obviously, he has been a talisman for Europe in two of the last three Ryder Cups.

So he knows what to do on the big stage. And what will certainly help is his appreciation of TPC River Highlands as a golf course, as he told Golf Channel following his third round.

“I’m really looking forward to going out in this position. I’ve said it a few times, I don’t really feel like I’ve been in contention at all this year. I feel like my best results have been right on the outskirts of being in contention, like very, very close but not quite there, and had some great finishes and played very, very consistently. But I haven’t played in the final group on a Sunday yet, so this is great I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

“I think it’s one of the best golf courses on tour for the differential between playing good and bad. If you hit good shots, you can shoot some scores, but bad shots, you can rack up some numbers as well. So I’m really excited about that challenge, and going out and trying to play well. Just enjoy the moment, do the best I can and hopefully it’s our time.”

Tommy Fleetwood will hope to shake off unwanted record with victory at the Travelers Championship

Fleetwood has a unique place in PGA Tour history right now. The European is the highest-ranked player in the career money list without a win on the tour.

Fleetwood has earned more $29 million during his PGA Tour career, leaving him in 66th place. He will obviously fly into the top 50 with a victory on Sunday, with almost $33 million under his belt.

But he will not be getting carried away. Both Henley and Bradley have won in the last 12 months and will have their eyes on strengthening their claims for a place at the Ryder Cup.

Meanwhile, Jason Day is five shots back of the lead and will be desperate to end his current wait for a win which stretches back more than two years now.
