Tommy Fleetwood was one of the players who had to climb the FedEx Cup standings at the BMW Championship if he wanted to book a place at The Tour Championship at East Lake in the coming days.

Tommy Fleetwood began the BMW Championship at 31st in the standings, so it was always likely that a good week for the Englishman would earn him a start in Atlanta. Thankfully, his game came together as the 33-year-old finished in a tie for fifth.

The result would have been particularly satisfying for the Olympic silver medalist as it seems that he was not entirely happy with his showing at the St Jude Championship – for one particular reason.

Fleetwood was making his first appearance since Paris at Memphis, but ultimately finished in a tie for 22nd, obviously leaving a question mark over whether his play-offs would continue beyond Castle Pines.

Tommy Fleetwood reveals what really frustrated him at St Jude Championship

It turns out that he was actually very happy with the majority of his game at TPC Southwind, but there was one part of his game which really let him down, as he spoke about how difficult this run of events has been for him.

“No, I feel okay. I think at this point in the year, I think you start to see so many guys starting to get frustrated, which is so easy to do. I think, again, it’s important to sort of have a good sense of where you are and how you feel,” he said.

“Coming towards the end of anything, you’re obviously trying to push that bit more. It’s always quite a long season bunched up, but again, you want to be there until the end, and I think playing in these events is always a good thing.

“There’s definitely times when you get frustrated and that’s showing a bit of mental tiredness, if you like, but I felt pretty good, and I felt like especially this weekend, I had a good handle on things because last week in Memphis was so frustrating. I played unbelievably well, and I was last in the field in putting.

“When you play like that, you want to capitalize on it, and I felt like that was very frustrating knowing where you sit in the FedExCup. This week, as well, Friday was kind of a day where I could have done better, so I felt like I just had to stay with it, and this weekend sort of got more out of it.”

The Englishman’s putting statistics on the PGA Tour this season

Putting has definitely been the Achilles heel for Fleetwood throughout the season. He is down in 88th on the PGA Tour this season for strokes gained with the putter.

That is not the only part of his game which has not been exceptional this year, with Fleetwood also 86th for strokes gained for approaches, while he is 91st for driving distance.

Funnily enough, the player one place ahead of him for strokes gained with the putter is actually Scottie Scheffler, so clearly, it is possible to win multiple times while not being the best on the greens. However, Scheffler seems to be a different animal when it comes to striking the ball.

Fleetwood has probably left himself with too much to do to contend at The Tour Championship, but he will hope that his putting at East Lake is good enough to ensure that he ends his PGA Tour season on a high.
