Korean star Tom Kim has noticed something very rare about Detroit Golf Club ahead of the Rocket Mortgage Classic this week.

The 22-year-old came within a whisker of landing his fourth PGA Tour title at the Travelers Championship after narrowly being edged out by Scottie Scheffler in a play-off.

Kim, who is good friends with the world number one, was seen laughing and joking with him for the majority of the final round, something golf commentator Smylie Kaufman didn’t like.

The world number 16 is now back in action this week and looking to cement his spot in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the end-of-season play-offs.

Speaking to the press ahead of his first round on Thursday, Kim claimed the course at the Rocket Mortgage Classic course was different from what he’s used to on the PGA Tour.

“It’s a very traditional style golf course. It is very tree-lined. You need to get the ball on the fairway,” he explained. Hopefully we won’t get much rain where it firms up, where you have to play for a lot of shots with run outs and ball position.

“I think we don’t get that much type of golf anymore. It’s all about wide fairways, hit it far, long holes.”

Kim added: “But on this golf course, there are certain holes where it plays long, but you have a lot of wedge opportunities where if you position yourself well, you can score well.”

Tom Kim can take advantage of weaker field this week

With several big names enjoying a mid-season break ahead of The Open, which will get underway in the middle of July, Kim is one of the star names competing in Detroit this week.

Defending champion Rickie Fowler and Australian star Min Woo Lee are the other notable participants.

For Kim, competing immediately after his signature event heartache feels like the right move.

He’s young, full of energy and more than capable of competing week in and week out. And given the nature of the field in Michigan, the Korean stands every chance of landing his fourth tour win.
