Tiger Woods’ major championship run between 2000 and 2001 was unlike anything witnessed in the modern era of professional golf.

Beginning at the US Open, the American won four consecutive majors, leading to the creation of the Tiger Slam. Woods’ 2000 US Open win at Pebble Beach was a putting masterclass and a very different win from what happened at The Open just a month later.

Woods ended the week on 19 under at St Andrews, eight shots clear of Thomas Bjorn and Ernie Els. The 2000 Open Championship was the first of three Claret Jugs for Woods, with his most recent coming in 2006.

Now, 25 years later, Woods believes his performance at the Old Course is the best he’s ever hit a golf ball.

Speaking during a recent video released by the PGA Tour, Woods discussed his victory at St Andrews.

“There are two events where I putted really well. That was the 97 Masters and the 2000 US Open at Pebble. But the best I have ever hit it is at the 2000 British Open,” Woods said.

“I felt like I had the ball on a string, and I could do anything I wanted to. People are probably amazed to hear this, but in most of the events, I didn’t really have it. Those were the ones I won by a lot. But most of them are just hanging in there and not making a double, making a key par save. That was most of the events I won. In order to win the tournament, you have to get to the weekend.”

Woods added: “First of all, you have to make the cut. And that is one of the things I am most proud of with my cut streak, I gave myself an opportunity to make a run on the weekend. Torrey one year I made the cut on the number and came out and shot 62-65 on the weekend to win but that doesn’t happen if I don’t make the cut. First things first I made a lot of cuts in my career to then go on and have an opportunity to win.”

How did Tiger Woods complete the ‘Tiger Slam’?

After Woods won his first Claret Jug, he headed to Valhalla, where he would add a second PGA Championship to his resume. Woods beat Bob May in a playoff where he walked in an iconic putt on the first playoff hole.

The 25-year-old would then have to wait until the new year for the Masters Tournament to complete the unique golfing feat.

Before the 2001 event at Augusta National, Woods admitted the media noise was difficult to deal with. However, the world number one wasn’t fazed.

Woods carded rounds of 70-66-68-68 to seal a two-shot victory over David Duval and make golfing history. It’s hard to imagine any player – even Scottie Scheffler – replicating such a feat in the coming years.
