There are so many players who must be wondering what they would have achieved had they not been playing in the same era as Tiger Woods.

Between the years of 1997 and 2008, Tiger Woods absolutely dominated the golfing landscape. As things stand, he is going to end his career with 15 major titles – with only Jack Nicklaus ahead of him.

Phil Mickelson had to wait until 2004 for his first major win, while Sergio Garcia was 37 when he won the Masters in 2017. The likes of Chris DiMarco and Colin Montgomerie would almost certainly not have ended their PGA Tour careers without a major had Woods not been on the scene.

Mickelson was potentially the most consistent rival of Woods’ career, with Lefty spending so much time at number two in the world golf rankings. Elsewhere, Vijay Singh was the man to take the world number one spot off of Woods. And Ernie Els would have potentially been the greatest in a number of other eras.

Tiger Woods asked who his biggest rival was at his peak

But Woods has now poked a bit of fun at the idea that he had any rival at his peak.

Speaking to Tom Kim ahead of Jupiter Links’ TGL debut this week, Woods was asked who the team’s biggest rival is.

“Well I think we are the dominant team, so dominant teams don’t have rivals. That’s simple,” he said.

Kim then asked who his biggest rival was when he was at his peak. Rather than reply, Woods’ wry smile said everything.

The players who won multiple majors while Tiger Woods was at his peak

It is remarkable how many players won more than one major between Woods’ first in 1997 and the 2008 US Open where he got across the line on essentially a broken leg.

The likes of Davis Love III, David Duval and Jim Furyk only won one major title in that time. Meanwhile, as previously mentioned, there were some big names who never got across the line in one of the sport’s four biggest events.

Half of Mickelson’s major wins came after Woods’ 14th in 2008. Meanwhile, Padraig Harrington won the two majors immediately after that year’s US Open at Torrey Pines.

Obviously, Woods is joking around when he suggests he had no rival. But when you consider that no-one won more than three majors in the time he won 14, it would be no surprise if there was some truth to Woods believing that he was that far clear of anybody else.
