Tiger Woods’ former coach has suggested who Rory McIlroy should hire as his new caddie after narrowly missing out on the US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

The Northern Irishman missed short putts on the 16th and 18th to hand Bryson DeChambeau the chance to secure his second major title.

After the American produced a remarkable up and down for par on the 72nd hole, McIlroy quickly vacated the premises as his ten-year wait for major number five continued.

Despite short missed putts costing him, McIlroy was heavily criticised for pulling a seven iron on the 15th hole instead of an eight, which would’ve placed him in the middle of the green.

Furthermore, the 35-year-old opted to take driver on 18 after successfully hitting three-wood the three days prior.

Haney, who was previously Tiger Woods’ coach, has suggested veteran caddie Steve Williams would never have let McIlroy hit a seven iron into the 15th.

He wrote: “I will say this: if Steve Williams was Rory’s caddie, I can promise you he would have never hit a perfect flighted 7 iron that rolled over the green on 15 into a terrible lie because he would have hit an 8 iron and sent it straight up in the air and held the green.”

When McIlroy returns to media duties, questions will be asked about his decision-making during the latter stages of the US Open.

The pressure was clearly getting to him and perhaps he was struggling to keep a clear head.

Of course, people will talk about the missed putts, but if McIlroy had taken the right clubs on 15 and 18, there’s every chance he would’ve signed for a card two shots better off.

It could go one of two ways, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Northern Irishman bounce back emphatically in the final major championship of the year.
