The 2025 PGA Championship was one to forget for Rory McIlroy in the end.

McIlroy looked off from the very first moment that he stepped on the property at Quail Hollow ahead of the PGA Championship.

Things got off to a terrible start for him before the tournament even began.

McIlroy’s driver was deemed to be non-conforming at the PGA Championship, and it has since emerged that many other players suffered the same fate, including Scottie Scheffler.

However, rather than control the narrative of that situation, McIlroy made things worse for himself by refusing to address the media during the PGA Championship.

After the highs the Northern Irishman experienced at The Masters, he was really brought back down to earth with a bang last week.

The 35-year-old struggled to find his best form out on the golf course and ended up in a tie for 47th.

However, he did still drive the ball well, especially concerning his driving distance stats.

McIlroy is well known for being one of the longest hitters in professional golf.

At the PGA Championship, McIlroy ended up in fourth spot in the driving distance stats.

But which golfers finished ahead of him?

It’s no surprise that major champions Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele finished in first and second place on the driving distance stats for the week.

Player nameAverage driving distance (yards)
Bryson Dechambeau337.3
Xander Schauffele330.0
Marco Penge324.9
Rory McIlroy324.5
Jon Rahm324.0

However, Marco Penge — the world number 180 — finishing inside the top three for the week undoubtedly was a surprise.

It really is quite remarkable just how far the players hit the ball in this day and age.

Long gone are the days when 300 yards was considered to be a long drive — it is barely even the tour average now.

Rory McIlroy’s driving stats in 2025

There has been no better driver of the ball in world golf over the past decade than McIlroy.

But how do his numbers look so far this season? There is certainly one area of his driving in need of improvement.

He clearly needs to work on his driving accuracy if he is to challenge at Oakmont and Royal Portrush in the remaining two majors of the season.

The thing is, 2025 has already been a spectacular season for McIlroy, so he won’t be panicking to try and fix things just yet.
