The Ryder Cup begins in earnest on Friday, with Bethpage Black playing host to one of the most eagerly anticipated golfing events of all time.
The best players in the world from the United States and Europe are set to go head-to-head at Bethpage Black over the next three days as they battle it out to hold aloft the Ryder Cup on Sunday evening.
Both Ryder Cup captains made their speeches at Bethpage during the opening ceremony on Wednesday night.
The excitement surrounding the 45th edition of the event has been building up to a crescendo, with the golfing community of Long Island, and indeed the world, now in a state of fever pitch.
There is some needle developing between the two sides as well. The American team are being paid to play at the Ryder Cup and Luke Donald couldn’t resist a cheeky swipe at his opponents during the opening ceremony.

The European captain suggested that the Ryder Cup is ‘not about money’ as he made his stance clear ahead of the first tee shot on Friday.
The Ryder Cup could well be influenced by mind games. However, the players who perform best around Bethpage Black will obviously determine the final result.
And the magnificent golf course in Upstate New York really is one of the most challenging around.
What a four-handicap golfer shot at Bethpage Black just before the Ryder Cup starts
Erik Anders Lang, the creator and founder of Random Golf Club – the self-proclaimed ‘worldwide network of local golf enthusiasts’.
Lang is a very solid golfer, and plays to a four-handicap.
However, would he be able to break 90 around the fearsome Bethpage Black layout, let alone shoot anywhere near his handicap?

Lang is a very solid golfer, as we have seen during the numerous videos he has posted to the Random Golf Club YouTube channel in the past.
However, Bethpage is a completely different animal. After all, as the sign says: “WARNING. The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers.”
Things were looking pretty good for Lang on his quest to break 90 at Bethpage after he went out in a score of eight-over par 43.
However, things got tetchy for Lang as he bogeyed three of his first four holes on the back nine to drop to 11-over par after 13 holes.
Lang then began to play some really solid golf, though, and managed to finish his final five-hole stretch in two-over par.
That meant that he carded a really impressive round of 83 in the end. Lang should be supremely proud of that score. Off the back tees at Bethpage…
