The reason why LIV golfer has just been disqualified from Open Qualifying

Numerous golfers attempted to qualify for the Open Championship across Great Britain on Tuesday.

It is what makes The Open Championship so great – anybody can throw their hat into the ring and attempt to qualify, just like the U.S. Open in America.

Final Open Qualifying really is a special day for those who take part, but it can also be a soul destroying one.

The fields at the four venues across England and Scotland consist of a great mix of amateurs, journeymen professionals, and tour pros from the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and LIV Golf all competing against one another.

The scores needed to progress through to The Open are usually incredibly low.

So it’s not uncommon for some golfers to withdraw after just nine holes or so, if they are having the proverbial shocker.

LIV golfer Sam Horsfield disqualified from Open Qualifying

Horsfield took part in Final Qualifying on Tuesday at West Lancashire Golf Club.

However, things didn’t go to plan for the LIV golfer.

The 28-year-old was seven-over par after just nine holes of the 36-hole competition.

He decided to call it a day and walk off the golf course. However, it doesn’t end there.

The correct thing for Horsfield to do would have been to inform officials that he was withdrawing.

However, he didn’t do that, and the R&A subsequently disqualified him.

There is also the other issue of leaving his playing partners out there to play in a two-some, but that’s a debate for another day.

It was just really poor show all round from Horsfield at West Lancashire Golf Club on Tuesday.

Horsfield, 28, has endured a really difficult 2025 season with the Majesticks so far.

The Englishman does have a top-10 to his name this season – a tie for seventh at LIV Adelaide, but his performances aside from that have been really poor.

Horsfield is a hugely talented golfer, so his form this season will have been immensely frustrating for him, as will his Open Qualifying disaster on Tuesday.

Withdrawing from the field without informing anyone is a really poor show from the LIV golfer, and he will know that deep down.
