The PGA Tour is in Japan for the Baycurrent Classic, presenting an opportunity for Japanese golfers to go toe-to-toe with some of the Tour’s best talents.
Japan has been home to incredible players over the years, including Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama, who became the first male Japanese player to win a major championship in 2021.
And another Japanese player, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour but has eight wins domestically, has seized the chance to showcase his golfing prowess by equalling a 2025 record at the Baycurrent Classic.

Kazuki Higa equals 2025 nine-hole record on the PGA Tour
Kazuki Higa shot 28 on the front nine at the Baycurrent Classic to match the lowest nine-hole score on the PGA Tour in 2025. His second-round performance saw him shoot eight birdies, parring only the par-3 seventh hole.
Higa joins a list of three other players to accomplish the feat this season. He shot a seven-under 64 on his round to shoot up the leaderboard, emphatically bouncing back from a one-over opening round on Thursday.
He has 15 professional wins to his name, including eight on the Japan Golf Tour, but has never won on the PGA Tour during his eight-year pro career.
His best performance at a major was a 76th-place finish at the 2023 PGA Championship. He has missed the cut at the three other majors he played.
But Higa was named the Japan Golf Tour Most Valuable Player in 2022 after topping the tour’s money list that season. While he is yet to have much success in America, Higa has proved he can catch fire alongside the best players on the PGA Tour.
Kazuki Higa on track for best PGA Tour finish
Higa has a history of playing well on the PGA Tour in Japan. His best-ever finish on the tour is a T-36 in 2023 at the then-named ZOZO Championship on home soil.
Higa went four under for the tournament after an opening round of 67. That bettered his performance a year prior, where he went seven-over for T-57.
He’s played 10 events on the PGA Tour since 2019 and made the cut only four times. But his last season on tour demonstrated marked improvement, as he finished under par for the first time, twice.
Now Higa is on track to make that three times, should he build on his performance at the Baycurrent.
