It was a big blow for the Genesis Invitational when the news emerged that Tiger Woods had, understandably, decided to withdraw from the event which came so soon after the death of his mother earlier this month.
Tiger Woods is the host of the Genesis Invitational; while there was great excitement amongst the fans about getting the chance to see the 15-time major champion compete in a 72-hole event for the first time since The Open Championship.
Woods helped make the PNC Championship arguably the best event stateside between the Tour Championship and the end of 2024, while he looked much more assured in his second TGL appearance as Jupiter Links beat Boston Common.
Unfortunately, Woods decided that he is not ready to tee it up this week. From a golfing perspective, it is a shame because of his outstanding record at Torrey Pines over the years. It was perhaps the ideal stage for the 49-year-old to make potentially his only PGA Tour appearance before the Masters.
The course Tiger Woods is yet to win on
Of course, the event is being played at Torrey due to the fires in California which prompted it to be moved away from Riviera.

Despite Woods’ interest in the event, it turns out that Riviera has not actually been a happy hunting ground for him over the years. In fact, it turns out that the course which will host the 2028 Olympic event is the one and only track Woods has played at least four times during his career where he is yet to win.
Tiger Woods’ career record at Riviera
It is remarkable that Woods has not yet won at Riviera. Few would have ever expected that, particularly as he finished second on two occasions before the turn of the century when the event was known as the Nissan Open – though 1998’s tournament was played at Valencia Country Club.
But his last top 10 came back in 2004, while his best result since 2018 was a tied for 15th the following year. Woods, of course, ended up withdrawing from the event before the weekend last year.

If there is one player in the game of golf who probably has no need at all to feel that he has unfinished business, it is surely Tiger Woods. But it is hard to imagine that his wait for a win at Riviera will not cross his mind once the 2026 Genesis Invitational comes around.
