Tiger Woods won major championships in a variety of ways during the prime of his career in the early to mid-2000s.

Woods’ 2000 US Open win saw the fresh-faced 25-year-old storm to a 15-shot victory at Pebble Beach and the only player to end the tournament under par.

However, there were some more tightly fought contests. Woods won the 2000 PGA Championship after a playoff with Bob May. He also won the 2005 Masters and 2008 US Open in extra holes.

Behind the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship was Woods’ most prolific major. Woods won back-to-back in 1999 and 2000 and repeated the feat in 2006 and 2007.

Despite his success, Tiger believes the PGA is actually the toughest tournament to win.

What Tiger Woods said about the PGA Championship in 2003

Before the 2003 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club, Woods spoke about the difficulty of the championship.

“This has been the tournament that has the best field of the four major championships,” Woods said before the 2003 edition.

“So with the field being as deep as it is, it becomes that much more difficult to win because you get more top players in the field.”

Why does the PGA Championship have the best field in golf?

The PGA Championship is widely regarded as the best field in professional golf. Unlike the other major championships, it does not include amateurs and is exclusively for professionals.

The Masters, for example, is invite-only, and the US Open and Open rely heavily on qualification, which opens up a route for players well outside the world’s top 100.

Tiger Woods’ PGA Championship record

As mentioned, despite the strength of the field, Woods has enjoyed plenty of success at the PGA Championship.

Woods’ first win came at Medinah Country Club in 1999 when he held off a final-round challenge from Sergio Garcia to win by one stroke. Twelve months later, at Valhalla, He defeated May in a three-hole playoff.

Tiger would then have to wait six years until to taste victory in the event. With the PGA Championship back at Medinah, Woods won by five strokes to clinch his 12th major and 51st PGA Tour win.

Woods’ last win at the PGA came in 2007 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, where he finished two shots clear on eight under.
