Justin Rose recently explained the key mistake that the USGA sometimes makes, which the PGA of America does not.
After Sepp Straka won the Truist Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club, the attention now turns to the PGA Championship.
It’s the second major of the year, at a well-known venue (Quail Hollow), so it should be an entertaining spectacle for golf fans.
In a preview of the upcoming tournament, Rose said what the organisers do right, and the US Open should take note.

Justin Rose pointed out USGA error that PGA of America doesn’t make
The PGA Championship is often labelled the fourth-best major, and that’s totally fair, but it’s still an excellent competition in its own right.
It doesn’t need to have a clear identity like the notoriously tough US Open test or the unique links challenge of the Open Championship.
Indeed, Rose suggested that the flexibility allowed to the PGA Championship actually works in its favour, whereas the US Open finds itself in “trouble” by catering to its niche.
“Yeah, it doesn’t pigeon-hole itself into being something that it shouldn’t be,” he said, in March.” I think the USGA has probably gotten itself into trouble trying to be something that’s hard to achieve sometimes, by chasing even par.
“The golf course gets a bit stretched out, sometimes you can lose it, sometimes players start to grumble. I think, from a PGA Championship and PGA of America point of view, I think they’re in a good spot and can just go with what they feel is right for that season.”
Justin Rose assessed PGA Championship’s standing within the game
Rose also commented on the PGA Championship’s standing within the game, which has been helped by its move to earlier in the calendar.
Plus, the Masters runner-up thinks Quail Hollow is a “world-class” golf course, and expects “really good crowds” this week.
“I think obviously, the date change and the recent history have been interesting, going from the last major of the year to fitting it in May now,” Rose added. “So, it doesn’t have that ‘glory’s last shot’ tagline that it used to have.
“So, listen, a major is a major. I think we all get there, and we all know what’s on the line. It doesn’t need to have any sort of gimmicks or taglines to associate itself with. I think it needs to go to world-class venues, which it does.
“Quail Hollow, for example, is a golf course we all know well. I think we all associate it with a great championship golf course. Charlotte, as a town, I think, is a lot of fun to be in and to play in. Typically, you get really good crowds there as well, so I think it’s going to be a fun and awesome event.”
