If you’ve won the Masters six times like Jack Nicklaus has, then you’re in a pretty good position to comment on the state of the golf course, even if it’s something you don’t like.
Augusta National is world renowned for being one of the best golf courses in the world and it’s very much a dream course of the average amateur golfer.
The pros, of course, get to play Augusta if they seal a place in the Masters, with a lucky few going on to win it.
As we know, Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most wins at Augusta with six. But the ‘Golden Bear’ hasn’t always found things plain sailing despite his success.
In fact, Nicklaus even went as far as to criticise one element of the course from his day.

What Jack Nicklaus didn’t actually like about Augusta National despite winning there six times
Nicklaus was speaking just last year on the Icanfly Podcast and he got into all sorts of detail about golf.
In particular, Nicklaus got onto the subject of Augusta National and actually said that despite his success there, he really disliked the bunkers they used.
“The type of sand they had. I think it came from North Carolina. I’m sure the sand changed a little bit but remember Augusta sand is so heavy,” Nicklaus quipped.
“You almost have to hit a bunker shot twice as hard as you do any place else to get that thing out of it. And you can’t get any spin out of it. They have changed that sand again. The sand at Augusta is now is better than when I played. I never liked the sand at Augusta. I thought it was really difficult.
“If you want to spin the ball how you like to be able to. If you can’t spin the ball, that’s okay, just play the shot. But when you get sand that looks like you can do it and nothing happens and the club just sticks and the ball just comes out [and dies]. You say man I am a better bunker player than that. I think it’s the most difficult sand we play.”
Jack Nicklaus’ overall record at Augusta National
When it comes to Augusta National, Jack Nicklaus is the man. It’s that simple.
He holds some of the best records out there for the golf course on top of the fact he’s won six times.
Nicklaus has the most birdies at 506, most eagles at 24, and the most cuts made at 37.
He’s also the player to go the longest time between winning two Masters tournaments, with 23 years between his first win in 1963 and his last in 1986.
He’s also the oldest ever winner at 46, one of only three players to defend his title, and has finished inside the top ten a whopping 22 times.
For Jack Nicklaus, Augusta National is very much his home and the stats simply prove it.
