Tiger Woods was set to make his return to the golf course this week at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Woods hosts the event but there has been uncertainty around whether or not he would actually compete.

Woods did initially confirm he’d be playing but after the passing of his mother, he has now decided that he’s simply not ready to play.

Still, Torrey Pines, as we all know, is one of the most famous golf courses in the world and many of the best to ever do it have won around there.

Woods is a man who knows the course better than most given his career but speaking back in 2008 after winning the US Open at the venue, Tiger admitted to being surprised at the big change they’d made to the tee at hole 13.

Tiger Woods shocked by ‘unbelievable’ Torrey Pines change

All the modern golf courses are forever trying to find ways to make things tougher for the best players.

Augusta National, Quail Hollow and more have all made changes in recent times in a bid to shake things up and make it harder.

However, back in 2008, Woods stated that he believed one change at Torrey Pines was simply unbelievable.

“Well, we’re almost on Black’s Beach! So — I don’t know, maybe we can hit up and over the cliff to get to the fairway. It’s unbelievable how far back that is. That usually is where they start their hang gliding over there. It’s hard to believe it’s that far back,” Woods said.

“But if it plays downwind you know you can get to the fairway. You can reach it. Bubba came pretty close yesterday, he said it was downwind, he was probably six yards short of the green, rolled it down the hill and got down to that flat spot.

“But the forecast isn’t for any Santa Ana’s, so we’re not going to have to worry about that. It’s a matter of hitting it down there and playing off the tee. You have a big enough fairway. Lay it up in the fairway and hope you won’t get it in any divot, because everybody will lay up to the same spot. They’re going to move the tee up the other two days, so hopefully that will give us a break.”

What is Tiger Woods’ record around Torrey Pines

When it comes to winning around Torrey Pines, nobody can claim to have a better record than Tiger Woods.

Woods has won a remarkable eight times at the San Diego course in what is another record he holds on the PGA Tour.

In fact, as the post from Justin Ray says, Woods has actually won eight times at three separate courses on the PGA Tour.

With the chance of making it nine now out of the question for this year at least, all eyes will be on Woods and seeing if he does actually tee it up before the Masters.
