The television coverage on day one of the Masters Tournament focused on the four featured groups.

Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas were part of the two marquee groups on Thursday morning.

Then, in the afternoon, much of the coverage was centred around Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg and Jon Rahm in the latter standout threesomes.

One player who did not receive much attention was Max Homa, meaning that fans probably missed his bizarre incident.

What happened to Max Homa on the 8th hole at Augusta National

Homa’s drive on the par-5 8th hole at Augusta National found the second cut to the left of the fairway.

His approach to the green was blocked by trees, but a small gap between them allowed him to play an audacious layup.

The 34-year-old executed the shot perfectly, and it took one bounce on the fairway before hitting an on-course marshal in the back.

The marshal had a flag in his hand to let the players behind know that the group in front were still playing, but Homa and his caddie must not have noticed.

Homa seemingly shouted, “Come on, dude,” afterward, but the marshal was simply doing his job. You can’t blame him for being frustrated, though.

He still made a par on the hole, so it was far from a disaster, albeit it might have felt like one at the time.

Max Homa faces challenge to make the cut at The Masters

Homa finished the first round two over par, putting him in a tie for 51st place after play concluded on Thursday at The Masters.

He needs to climb at least one position on Friday to make sure he’s inside the top 50 and stays at Augusta for the weekend.

What score he needs to shoot is yet to be decided, but one would assume that another 74 will put him in serious danger of missing out.

An even-par 72 or less should see him through to the final two rounds, which he’s more than capable of doing.
