Max Homa got off to a solid start at the 3M Open, with a fine round of five-under par 66.
The problem for Homa is that Adam Svensson shot an 11-under par 60, so he finds himself six shots off the lead at the 3M Open after day one.
Homa is doing his level best to make the FedEx Cup play-offs, and has been playing every week he can in order to rack up some points.
After he finished in a tie for fifth at the John Deere Classic, Homa said that he was really excited about his form heading into crunch time of the PGA Tour season.
The man from Burbank, California, didn’t play great at the Barracuda Championship last week, but he rediscovered some of his best stuff during the opening round of the 3M Open on Thursday.
Homa spoke to reporters after his round of 66, and opened up on how he’s feeling about his game right now.
Struggling Max Homa confirms if he’s playing on the PGA Tour next week
The 34-year-old is in a tough spot right now.
He has lost complete confidence in his game. However, the good news is that it seems like he may have turned a corner.

It’s very much a case of baby steps right now, but his game looked in fine fettle at TPC Twin Cities on Thursday.
Homa was asked how much pressure he feels right now, considering the fact that he needs a big result in order to jump into the FedEx Cup play-off spots.
He said: “Yeah, it’s really hard to compartmentalize that. Yeah, I need to win. I really need to win because my wife’s pregnant and I need to go home. We have like two weeks left. It’s a little extra stressful, but I think the only way that you can go out and win a golf tournament is by not exactly trying to win a golf tournament. So it’s a weird headspace. But I know what I need to do, I need to play unbelievable.
“Fortunately my game’s felt awesome the last month or so, so yeah, just got to, I don’t know, I don’t know how you just make yourself win. I’m just trying to keep doing what I’m doing and see what happens on a Sunday.”
Homa then responded when asked whether he plans to play next week at the Wyndham Championship.
He said: “My wife told me to play, so it’s scheduled the Monday after the Wyndham. Yeah, just every day I finish a day of golf I look at my phone and see if I’m flying home so we’ll see. It’s a good problem to have.“
Max Homa’s 2025 PGA Tour results
Homa has struggled badly in 2025.
He began to lose his form and confidence midway through 2024, and that has bled into this year.
Here are Homa’s results from the 2025 season.
| PGA Tour results | Homa’s totals |
| Events played | 18 |
| Wins | 0 |
| Top-5s | 1 |
| Top-10s | 1 |
| Top-25s | 2 |
| Missed cuts | 7 |
Homa showed signs of life a few weeks ago at the John Deere Classic, and he continued to impress on Thursday at the 3M Open.
The challenge for him now will be to maintain that form for the next three days. Three rounds in the mid-60s may well be enough to get the job done.
