It wasn’t to be – again – for Rory McIlroy at The Masters last week as he endured a bit of a nightmare final three rounds.

McIlroy actually made a good start at Augusta but faded away as the weather and some poor shots ensured he got nowhere near eventual winner, Scottie Scheffler.

Of course, Scheffler is the talk of the town right now when it comes to golf.

The world number one is playing some of the best golf the PGA Tour has seen for many a year and for players like McIlroy, it’s proving harder and harder to keep up.

McIlroy is back in action at the RBC Heritage this weekend and will be hoping to find some form.

However, when it comes to The Masters, the pressure will remain every year until he eventually gets over the line and wins it.

And speaking to Sky Sports, pundit and former European Tour player Oliver Fisher has suggested that the conditions at Augusta could end up playing the biggest part in McIlroy eventually winning.

Rory McIlroy told what might be needed for him to finally win The Masters

Speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Fisher suggested that the weather conditions might need to play into Rory’s hands for him to win.

“It’s tough when you’ve got the clout of Rory that almost holds the weight of the DP World Tour, he’s been the man on the PGA Tour too – still is, even though Scottie’s catapulted himself to the guy in form – but we all look at Rory like he’s the needle mover. Coming into the first major here, his game wasn’t where he wanted it to be. He won in Dubai, but not had the best season on the PGA Tour,” Fisher said.

“It’s hard to get it all right and at Augusta, maybe with the weather conditions that need to suit him…I don’t know, maybe it needs to be a bit softer to win at Augusta. Maybe it needs to be a bit damp, playing long, playing a bit tough in that way. Rather than being firm or a bit faster, or windy, probably not the ideal conditions for Rory last week. It’s not to say he can’t do it, it’s just it’s a little bit tougher for his game.”

Pressure will only increase on Rory McIlroy at Augusta

With each passing year, the pressure and noise around McIlroy winning at The Masters seems to get more and more intense.

While he is still just 34 and has time on his side, there is an ever-growing worry that McIlroy might never actually get this one over the line.

McIlroy is, of course, one of the best players in the world. But the competition now is better than ever and every year he doesn’t win, it just gets harder and harder.

2025 will bring much of the same when it comes to McIlroy and The Masters.

Whether he’ll have made any changes before then and drop on with the right conditions, remains to be seen.
