Sky Sports pundit Jamie Spence has suggested that one player now needs to move away from LIV Golf and not feature in another event for the breakaway tour after what happened at the weekend.

LIV Golf arguably appears to be going from strength to strength, having lured the likes of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton across ahead of this season.

Meanwhile, there is absolutely no question that Bryson DeChambeau’s two major championship performances in 2024 reflect well on the tour. Richard Bland meanwhile, recently won the Senior PGA Championship.

Of course, it is hard to imagine many of those who made the jump regret their decision, with the financial benefits clearly easing the blow of being excluded from certain events.

Laurie Canter warned against returning to LIV Golf

Laurie Canter is in an interesting position, with the 34-year-old one of those who made the switch early on. He is currently a reserve on the tour having missed out on securing a place on one of the teams.

Canter has not played on LIV since February, but he has now won on the DP World Tour, clinching victory at the European Open at the weekend.

And speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Jamie Spence has urged Canter to return to the DP World Tour full-time as soon as possible.

“They dangled some money in front of his face when he was doing pretty well on the DP World Tour and he took it,” he said.

“As I understand it, he’s paid his fines which is why he’s playing back on our tour. Now he’s won, listen, he can do whatever he wants, but I would just say keep playing and don’t be tempted, because there’s only one reason he’d go back there and that’s for a bit more cash.

“But yeah, he’s building a nice career for himself again which he was doing anyway, then the carrot was dangled and he grabbed it, but it proved that they didn’t really want him because he was filling up the roster for them. So I think he’d be a bit of a fool to go back unless they made him an offer he can’t refuse.”

Canter may be conflicted about LIV future

There was always going to be a point when some of those who made the move to LIV started to feel that the switch was not as beneficial to them.

LIV continues to recruit some big names, with Anthony Kim also a headline-grabbing signing this year; and given that they limit the field each event, players such as Canter find themselves in a difficult position.

In fairness, Canter may be quite happy with the role he now has. But if the move to LIV has set him up for the next few years, you would imagine that he would now enjoy the experiences he has on the DP World Tour a lot more.
