Tommy Fleetwood has endured another mixed bag on the PGA Tour this season, with his latest attempt at success now taking place at The Open.

Fleetwood started The Open with a two-over 73, and certainly improved upon that early on in his second round.

The Englishman has remarkably yet to win on the PGA Tour in his entire career, having made 160 appearances.

But Fleetwood has certainly come close, having finished as runner-up on six occasions, most recently at last month’s Travelers Championship.

Fleetwood remained upbeat despite his near miss at TPC River Highlands, which he followed up with a T34 finish at the Scottish Open.

Sir Nick Faldo suggests Tommy Fleetwood has two problems he must fix

He’s now taking on his second round of The Open at Royal Portrush, during which Sir Nick Faldo suggested two improvements he can make to his game.

Six-time major winner Faldo said on Sky Sports Golf: “He needs to learn to fade it better. He really is one dimensional with that draw, he really does struggle.

“And the putting when he gets a chance, you have just got to let it go, haven’t you? It’s like he steers the ball towards the hole. He had a great chance at Hoylake and it was like he couldn’t get the ball to run through.

“Sometimes it’s a great trick to just let the ball run through the hole. If you see a line, go through the hole, hit it and let the hole get in the way.”

Tommy Fleetwood PGA Tour putting stats heading into The Open

Fleetwood is currently taking on The Open for the 11th time in his career, having missed the cut on four occasions.

That includes last year at Royal Troon, but importantly his best-ever finish at the major arrived at Royal Portrush.

He eventually finished six shots behind champion Shane Lowry in 2019, but it will have given him great confidence heading into this year’s event.

But it does seem that something is holding Fleetwood back from getting over the line, as proven with his late collapse at the Travelers Championship.

He was in the best position possible to clinch his first PGA Tour win, only to blow his chance at the very last hole to a grateful Keegan Bradley.

And as Faldo mentioned, Fleetwood does have room to improve on the greens, currently sitting T33rd on the PGA Tour for putting average and T56th for strokes gained putting.
