Only 11 players in the history of the game have won more major championships than Sir Nick Faldo.

Faldo enjoyed an illustrious career that included six major championships and 43 professional wins worldwide.

However, it wasn’t always a smooth ride for the now 67-year-old. In fact, the road was very bumpy at times.

Faldo recently admitted that his swing rebuild in the mid-1980s was the lowest point of his career.

That said, the hard work that he put in more than paid off in the end.

After his playing days ended, Faldo evolved into a golf commentator, and his no-nonsense style proved to be hugely appealing to the masses.

The six-time major champion has since retired from his commentary duties, but he is still not afraid of speaking his mind. Faldo recently labelled LIV golfers as ‘soft’ for deciding to join what he describes as a ‘fail-free tour’.

However, he should always be remembered most for his extraordinary achievements on the golf course.

Sir Nick Faldo picks out the best two rounds he ever played

Faldo produced some stunning rounds throughout his career.

However, two stand alone in his mind as the very best.

The Englishman picked out his final round at Muirfield in 1987 as one of the best two rounds of his life.

Faldo won The Open Championship that year after making 18 pars in his final round, defeating Paul Azinger by a single stroke.

The final round proved to be the blueprint for Faldo’s future success, as he became well known for grinding out scores around very hard golf courses.

However, the other round that features in Faldo’s top two certainly didn’t lack flair.

Back in 1996 at The Masters, Faldo trailed Greg Norman by six shots heading into the final round.

The Englishman ended up winning by five shots as he fired a final round 67, while Norman collapsed to a 78.

Faldo said: When I look back on my career there is absolutely no doubt about it – to win your first major championship, the final round at Muirfield in 1987 has to rate as one of my greatest 18-hole performances under the gun. It sounds boring, doesn’t it? Eighteen pars on a Sunday at Muirfield. But that was very, very special. That and my last-day 67 at Augusta to win my third Masters title in 1996, I’d say those are the two best and most significant rounds of my career. The book-ends to my six major titles – with the Open victory on that dank day at Muirfield just edging it.

Nick Faldo’s major record

The Englishman was a fearsome competitor in his heyday.

And his record at the major championships speaks for itself:

The fact that Faldo never won a US Open is bizarre, given how good his ball striking was.

However, three Masters and three Open Championships is not a bad return!

By his own admission, his rounds at Muirfield in 1987 and Augusta National in 1996 were the standout performances of his career.

Given the fact that they both led to major wins, it’s hard to argue against him!
