Bryson DeChambeau might have played himself into the final grouping for the final round at The Masters but three-time winner Sir Nick Faldo was far from impressed with some of his play.

DeChambeau played well all afternoon in round three to card a 69 and go into the final day just two back of Rory McIlroy.

Like McIlroy, DeChambeau had a few wobbles within the round and was not perfect but when it mattered, he scrambled well, including a fine birdie on the final hole.

However, while DeChambeau was having a struggle mid-round, Masters winner Sir Nick Faldo got into a conversation with Butch Harmon and suggested that DeChambeau falls short of being where the great Tiger Woods was.

Sir Nick Faldo disappointed in Bryson DeChambeau at The Masters

On the 15th hole, DeChambeau put himself into the ideal position off the tee with a massive tee shot that left him under 200 yards into the green.

However, he then pulled his second shot left and long to leave himself with a tricky up and down and at the time, Faldo criticised the American.

“There’s no control in this. You have to have soft shots. You have to have a way to cut it, fade it, work it. He just – sorry that is just full bore. You have to have touch,” Faldo quipped.

Adding to the conversation, Butch Harmon couldn’t but bring up Tiger Woods.

“That is the thing that made Tiger Woods so good, when he learnt how to do all that. He is going at it too hard. He doesn’t need to. He hits the ball hard enough.”

Continuing the criticism, Faldo then continued, suggesting Bryson could learn a thing or two.

“He needs a half shot, Faldo continued. “I used to keep the right foot flat on the ground and just get a lovely little hold off, especially with anything less than a seven iron because you just want the thing to go out and you know it’s going to go to the right. It’s like a professional block and if you are really good you block it one, two or three yards.

Harmon then added that ‘Tiger was really good at that’ before suggesting he’d spoken to DeChambeau about it previously.

Bryson DeChambeau on course for best ever Masters finish

Augusta National has never really been a happy hunting ground for Bryson DeChambeau but he appears certain to score his best finish this time around.

The American is within two shots of McIlroy and crucially, left the course with huge momentum after the putt on 18.

After missing the cut in 2022 and 2023, DeChambeau finished a career best 6th in 2024 and it looks like he’s in position to go one better.

Just like the US Open in 2024, we are going to see a McIlroy and DeChambeau head to head and for the golfing fans, it’s the ideal scenario.
