Shane Lowry has already had a career that most golf fans would give anything to experience, with the Irishman winning a major and having his moment in the brightest spotlight on the Ryder Cup stage.

There is an argument that Shane Lowry has enjoyed an incredibly underrated career.

After winning on the European Tour as an amateur – at the Irish Open no less – Lowry saw his name added to the Claret Jug as he won The Open Championship in 2019.

And having been a key part of Europe’s last three Ryder Cup teams, it fell to Lowry to hole the putt that retained the trophy for Luke Donald‘s men in September.

Had Lowry missed, it seems entirely possible that Team USA would pull off perhaps the greatest comeback in sporting history.

Of the two teams at Bethpage, only Justin Rose was older than the 38-year-old Lowry. So perhaps it is no surprise that he has given some thought to how much longer he has to play at the highest level on the PGA Tour.

And speaking to the Irish Times, Lowry explained how long he hopes to continue playing for.

“If I can get another good five or six years out myself, I sort of have 45 in my head, I’m not saying I’m going to retire when I’m 45 but what I’m saying is I feel like if I can get to 45 still at a competitive level, I’ve done very, very well, you know, because I’ve done 17 years on tour now, it’s a long, long time,” he said.

“That’s a long career in a sport. And I feel like if I can get up to 20, 21, 22 years [on tour] at a high level, like, I’ve had a really, really good career.”

Shane Lowry hints there is more to come from his game

Lowry is playing some of the better golf of his career currently. It is remarkable to think that he had not actually played in the Tour Championship before 2024.

And it seems that he is thinking more and more about how he can extend his career in this era where players are seemingly peaking at a younger age.

He is working with personal trainer Robbie Cannon. And he clearly believes that there is plenty more to come from his game.

“Look, I’ve always been conscious about my weight. Right? And I’ve always been that way, and I’ve always wanted to lose weight, and I kind of get obsessed with it at times, but having someone like Robbie, who knows the ins-and-outs and knows the way to do it,” he said.

“I trust him on what he does. So yeah, I think we’ve done a good job of getting it right. And I still have a long way to go, I still am working towards some goals that I have in that regard and I’m trying to get stronger, I’m trying to get faster, I’m trying to hit the ball further.”

Lowry has not had the consistency to compete with the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy over the course of the season.

But he has proved that he is the man you want over a crucial putt when the pressure is at its most intense.

That is a special attribute to have in your locker.
