If there was a player on the PGA Tour who was delighted to see Rory McIlroy win The Masters last month, it was his good friend Shane Lowry.

Lowry has been in Rory’s corner his entire career and as McIlroy walked off Augusta National after holing out to beat Justin Rose, Lowry was right there waiting for him.

Of course, Lowry is no slouch himself when it comes to winning big events. He won The Open in 2019 in impressive fashion to write his name in the history books forever.

However, Lowry has only won once since – coincidentally alongside McIlroy at The Zurich in 2024 – as he’s struggled to get back to his very best.

Indeed, when quizzed on that ability to get up and keep winning after a big success, Lowry has praised McIlroy’s attitude towards the game.

Shane Lowry praises Rory McIlroy after seeing him finally win The Masters

After showing good form in round two and getting to 11-under par and just one shot off the lead at The Truist Championship, Lowry was quizzed on his lack of wins and in particular, how McIlroy had managed to keep being so successful.

And speaking about his good friend, Lowry admitted it’s impressive to witness.

“I found it hard in 2019 when I won The Open to kind of come back out and — you almost want it too much sometimes to almost forget about that and move on.

“I think there’s a part of you that should enjoy what you’ve just done and allow yourself just kind of — I suppose not try too hard to back up what you’ve done. Look, I’m sure Rory’s won enough times, enough big tournaments to reset his goals and move on. So I don’t know why I’m answering that question,” Lowry laughed.

“Look, you try to put it behind you, but it’s such a big win, it’s something that is there to be kind of, I guess for the next while when the tough — you know, when you have tough days, it kind of is there in the back of your head that you’ve achieved something great.

“Look, I keep saying to him, no matter what he does now, it doesn’t matter, but obviously he’s a very driven individual. I’m sure he doesn’t think like that. I’m sure he’s very driven to win more.”

Shane Lowry getting back towards his best ahead of the PGA Championship

The opening two rounds in Philadelphia have shown Lowry is coming into form but there have been signs already in 2025 in fairness to him.

Lowry might have just that one win with McIlroy by his side in the last six seasons but he’s had some strong results in 2025 so far.

He finished second behind McIlroy at Pebble Beach, seventh at the Arnold Palmer, T8 at The Valspar and then finished top 20 at both the RBC Heritage and The Zurich last time out.

The signs are good for Lowry and while so many big names are being mentioned ahead of the PGA and US Open, the Irishman is not someone to be looked over.
