Shane Lowry has shared his game plan for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow this week.

The Irishman is coming off a victory alongside Rory McIlroy at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans and has enjoyed an excellent first half of the 2024 season.

Along with his win at TPC Louisiana, Lowry has managed to finish in the top five at the Cognizant Classic and the Arnold Palmer.

And ahead of the PGA Tour’s signature event, he’s been talking up his chances.

Lowry’s record at this week’s venue isn’t great. In his four previous outings, he’s missed the cut twice, tied for 34th, and tied for 64th.

Furthermore, he’s only broken par once – finishing on two under in 2018. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the Irishman has admitted the course doesn’t suit him particularly well.

He explained: “I don’t know, to be honest. I didn’t have a great record at Bay Hill but Bay Hill is the type of course I should do well on.

“This suits longer hitters. I am not short, but this suits the longer guys. I feel like I need to try not to be one of the longer hitters this week if you get what I am trying to say.”

Lowry believes that if he keeps the ball in play, his “dangerous” iron play could stand him in good stead in Charlotte.

“A lot of holes out here; you stand on the tee, and it makes you want to hit the ball hard,” he added.

“If I can put the ball in play and hit the fairways, I can be dangerous, as my iron play is my strength. “If I can hit a lot of fairways, that’s my game plan.

“There are a lot of bunkers out there around 300 yards that I can carry if I hit a really good one, but if I don’t hit a good one, it’s going to be in really bad shape, so I just need to be wary of that and play within myself.”

Shane Lowry guaranteed four rounds of PGA Championship preparation this week

Fortunately, for the 70 players featuring at the Wells Fargo, there’s no cut after the first two rounds. All participants are guaranteed four rounds of solid tournament play ahead of the PGA Championship.

The Quail Hollow event is near-perfect preparation for the PGA Tour guys compared to the LIV Golf contingent.

Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and 13 other LIV players will be practising away from tournament conditions this week.

For Lowry, proving himself on a course that doesn’t naturally suit him would be a huge boost heading into the year’s second major.

Sticking to his game plan and playing to his strengths could see him add another impressive finish to an already profitable season.
